Hanmi Gallery is pleased to announce the 22nd Interim Exhibition of ‘The Woman, The Gaze, The World’

 

Curated by Crystal Bennes, The Woman, The Gaze, The World is loosely themed around a picking apart of the question of whether women see the world differently than men. Here, “seeing” refers most obviously to the individual artist’s interpretation of the world, but also as something which is further mediated through the camera lens. A second element which ties these ideas of seeing and representation to the gender question (which is admittedly provocative) is about what interpretation itself actually means – as woman, artist, and/or photographer. Each one of the artists in the exhibition offers a specific take on photography as a medium and practice, displaying an element of filtering, of staging, of manipulating the “truth”.

 

Each artist has been paired with a writer, who has been challenged to create a new piece of writing that responds, however indirectly, to the work of that artist and to the themes in question. The intention here is to add a layer of richness to the exhibition, particularly given the considerable crossover in the way photographers and writers approach reality. Both disciplines frequently tend toward a staging of reality in order to highlight its theatricality and the often flawed assumptions we regularly make about how we think we see the world.

 

Hanmi Gallery is due to undergo major refurbishment but is currently open to the public with a program of interim exhibitions, of which The Woman, The Gaze, The World is the 22nd. The grand opening of the gallery will take place in Autumn 2013.

 

The Woman, The Gaze, The World is curated by Dr Crystal Bennes, classicist, curator and critic. Crystal is co-editor of Pages Of Magazine, contributing editor of Icon Magazine and runs a contemporary art project space in London, Flat C Gallery.

 

Two events will accompany the exhibition: a group discussion on the state of women in the arts on Tuesday 30 April at 7pm, and a panel debate featuring a neurobiologist, a transgender person, an advertising executive and a gender theorist on whether women really do see differently than men on Thursday 2 May at 7pm.

Artist & Writer Pair Biographies

 

Catherine Hyland is a London-based landscape photographer who creates images which blur the natural and the artificial, where the real and the imagined become difficult to separate. She graduated from the RCA in 2011 with an MA in Visual Communication.

 

Esme Fieldhouse is an architectural assistant at London architecture practice, Studio Weave. Prior to this, Esme worked at Blueprint Magazine and she continues to work as a freelance writer. She is also co-editor of Matzine.

Seulki Ki is a Korean photographer who completed her MFA in Fine Art at the Slade. Her photographs are sparse, subtle idiosyncratic takes on loneliness and the body in urban environments.

 

Hestia Peppe is an itinerant artist, sometime governess, writer and anti-socialite. Her work attempts to create a space for itself in sometimes inhospitable media and meanings. She recently completed an MFA in Computational Studio Art at Goldsmiths.

Eugenia Ivanissevich, an Argentian artist, plays with the conventions of landscape photography by creating layered still lifes using commonplace objects and other images from her many travels. She completed an MA in Photography from the RCA in 2012.

 

Claire Trévain is an Anglo-Breton poet, writer and academic. She is the editor of Sabotage Reviews, a website promoting independent presses. Her first full collection of poetry, The Shipwrecked House, has just been published by Penned in the Margins.

Victoria Jenkins is a Brighton-based photographer, currently undertaking an MA in Photography at the RCA, who explores the collision between fact and fiction with playful images that initially appear to illustrate factual scientific processes, but are layered with obfuscation and trickery.

 

Sarah Lester is a writer and former assistant editor at the Journal of Wild Culture, where she wrote on the intersection between the arts and sciences, culture and the environment.

Alison Stolwood completed an MA in Photography from Brighton in 2011. She uses camera technologies and notions of time and change to create work which highlights the often blurred distinctions between what is natural and what is artificial.

 

Crystal Bennes is a curator, critic, classicist and part-time artist. She is the co-editor of Pages Of Magazine, contributing editor of Icon Magazine and runs the London-based contemporary art space, Flat C Gallery.
