Mona Choo

Mona Choo wants to draw parallels between the materiality of an object and it’s non-physical shadow, with that of our physical bodies and our non-physical consciousness. Each cannot exist without the other. Exploring materiality versus non-materiality has led to a lot of experimentation where she works with clear materials, with light, and also with trying to create an illusion of fragility even though the sculptures are in fact quite stable.

The sculptures also serve as metaphors for our relationship with nature and the fragility of our ecosystem. When one point in the sculpture comes apart many of its other points are affected and the whole structure suffers. Our current view of the world and the way we live is very much focused on individual points rather than the structure as a whole. We need to begin to understand that we are all interconnected and our actions affect one another in ways we cannot ever know.

Choo was commissioned by the Financial Times (Asia) and RBS Coutts in 2010 for their annual ‘Women In Asia Awards’ to produce three pieces of art to be given as the awards. In 2012, Choo was invited by the Macau Printmaking Triennial to represent Singapore in the inaugural event and her work is now in their archive collection.
