Geoff Litherland

Geoff Litherland borrows from a variety of sources, from the natural world, to traditional genre painting, to surreal science fiction, to ‘the phantasia of abstraction’, to create uncanny universes that question contemporary man’s relationship to their environment, and the role of art within this tension.

His ‘landscapes’ see traditional kitschy scenes painting over with thick layers of malleated paint in bright and primary colours, leaving only a small singular section exposed without context, or sections of romantic landscapes pasted into fragile science fiction style supports, pieced together with spacecraft, debris, and unusual industrial structures. His portraits see 18th century style men and women juxtaposed with contemporary or surrealist dress. In all avenues, Litherland creates an inexplicable, and enchanting world that draws in viewers with its uncanny effects.

Geoff Litherland holds a B.A in painting from the Falmouth College of Arts, and M.F.A in painting from Goldsmiths University of London. He has been exhibited in various locations in recent years, including at the London Art fair, Saatchi Online Artists, Art Work Space Gallery and the Lakeside Arts Center. Litherland currently lives and works in London and is a Fine Arts lecturer at Nottingham Trent University.
